Tater® vs. other brands

There's a reason pros are switching to swing Tater®

Most wood bats are made for retail shelves — lower-grade lumber, bulk machining, inconsistent pop. The Tater® Wood Bat is hand-split, hand-finished, and bone-rubbed to MLB standards.

  • Higher density wood lasts longer and provides better “pop” off the barrel.
  • Ink dot tested to prove our bats meet professional standards.
  • Hand-split wood follows the natural grain, making bats stronger, more durable, and less likely to break.
  • Bone rubbing compresses the wood fibers, making the bat harder, improving durability, and increasing ball exit speeds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the I13 and the X12?
The I13 is the power-hitter turn model — large barrel, end-load, medium handle. It's designed for hitters who want maximum barrel mass and exit velocity. The Tater-X12 PRO is the contact-hitter model — thin handle, medium barrel, balanced feel, built for spraying the gaps. Pick based on which swing style fits you better.
How does the I13 compare to a standard 243 or 271?
The I13 is a hybrid of both. It uses the 271's flared knob and medium handle and combines it with the 243's larger, more aggressive barrel. The result is a bat with more barrel mass than a 271 but a more comfortable grip than a standard 243. If you've considered a 243 for the barrel but disliked the knob, the I13 solves that.
Should I order the I13 in maple or birch?
Maple is the standard pro choice for power hitters — denser, harder hitting surface, more pop. Birch is slightly more forgiving with a touch more flex, more durable than ash. Both wood species are ink dot certified and built to the same standard. If you're between, see our Maple vs. Birch Guide.
What size wood bat should I order?
Length ranges from 30"–34". Drop weight (length-to-weight ratio) ranges from -3 to +2. Drop weight is the difference between bat length in inches and bat weight in ounces — a -3 drop means a 34" bat weighs 31 oz. Most adult hitters use 32"–34" at a -2 or -3 drop. Most BBCOR-certified leagues (high school, NCAA) require -3. For a personalized recommendation by height, weight, and league, use our Wood Bat Size Chart at /pages/wood-bat-size-chart.
What types of wood are Tater bats made from?
Hard maple and yellow birch — both MLB-grade. Maple has been the pro standard for over 20 years: densest, hardest hitting surface, biggest pop on clean contact, but a smaller sweet spot and less forgiveness on mis-hits. Birch sits between maple and ash — similar density to maple with more flex on impact, which makes it more forgiving on mis-hits and a smart starting point for hitters transitioning from metal to wood. Read the full breakdown in our Maple vs Birch vs Ash guide at /blogs/the-lumber-yard/differences-between-maple-birch-and-ash-bats.
Do you offer discounts for team or bulk orders?
Yes — team and bulk pricing is available, typically starting at 12 bats. Contact our team sales desk with your spec, roster size, and timing through /pages/contact-us and we'll send a custom quote within one business day. The more bats in the order, the better the per-unit pricing scales.
Are Tater bats suitable for professional play?
Yes. Tater Baseball is an MLB-supplier wood bat company — our bats are swung by professional players at the highest level of the game. There is no separate "consumer-grade" production line. The same MLB-grade billets, the same hand-finishing process, and the same QA standards apply to every retail bat we ship as to the bats we cut for pro hitters.
What is the warranty on Tater wood bats?
30-day limited warranty on structural cracking under normal field use. To qualify, the bat must be a 2021 model year or later, you must be the original purchaser with proof of purchase from an authorized Tater dealer, and you must have followed our hitting guidelines (no cage-style dimpled balls, no storage in extreme heat or cold like a car trunk, no excessive moisture exposure). Full warranty terms and care guidelines at /pages/tater-wooden-bat-warranty.
Why are wood bats cupped at the end?
Cupping is a small concave dish drilled into the end of the barrel. It removes a few grams of mass from the very tip, which shifts the bat's balance point slightly toward the hands and makes the swing feel quicker through the zone. Tater hand-cups each bat, and our process allows for variable cup depths to dial in feel without compromising end-cap strength — which actually reduces the risk of chips and cracks on inside pitches.
What is the black dot on the handle?
Every Tater maple and birch bat carries an ink dot near the handle as proof of MLB-grade slope-of-grain certification. The ink dot's bleed pattern reveals whether the wood grain runs cleanly along the bat's long axis — a tight bleed means safe, MLB-spec slope; a fast bleed means rejected billet. The dot is the visible proof every bat passed inspection before leaving our shop.

Great bat and great wood!

Tater-I13 Pro

Hits like a balanced sledgehammer!! If you have been around other bats you will immediately know the difference when you hit with a Tater. I’m not kidding. I was so surprised. I have 3 of them in 3 different turning models. Great bats, great value, exceptional quality!

Tater-I13 Pro

Not only does Tater make a good looking bat the performance is top tier and the brand is relatable. I can’t imagine swinging anything else anymore so much so I’m about to buy a second Tater.

Tater-I13 Pro

Pop as advertised! I’ll be ordering more in the future for sure

Tater-I13 Pro

Great bat! Best i13 I've had.

Tater-I13 Pro

I purchased a maple i13 custom in early July and I received it in just a couple of weeks. The finish was beautiful and the length/weight were perfect. I took it straight to my Men's League game that weekend and absolutely destroyed two balls off the wall. I've swung several different wood bat companies over the years and I can honestly say nothing has had the pop of my Tater bat. I'm buying two more before I head to Myrtle Beach for the World Series and plan on destroying more pitches!

Tater-I13 Pro

Great bat! Made to order. It’s a Christmas present but will be in the cage soon.

Tater-I13 Pro

2nd bat from Tater. My son loves it. Great customer service. Went to the factory in Waterbury. They helped pick one out and engraved it for us right there. Will continue to use Tater.

Tater-I13 Pro

One of the best wood bats I’ve ever used. The sound of the barrel is like just like music to my ears. Best wood !!!!!

Tater-I13 Pro

Great bat, very balanced feel through the zone, large sweet spot and just solid !!... If I had only one at bat left in a game and had to make something happen, i'd go with this bat.

Tater-I13 Pro

Just ONE Minor Flaw These bats are awesome! They feel good, look good, and will serve me well. Only ONE minor issue I have though. They have the gloss on them and I wanted a natural handle. I don't use batting gloves so I like the grip of raw wood. I asked for an unglossed handle but both bats were glossed anyway. Oh well, nothing that a little sandpaper won't take care of.

Tater-I13 Pro

Great bat Tater i13 doesn’t disappoint! Great bat!

Tater-I13 Pro

Really Impressed! The bat is amazing. I expected the bat to be a good product, so when I used it and realized its was not only good, but top tier I was pleasantly surprised. I'm big on wood bats, I have over 30 in my collection at the moment and Tater is my favorite, I ordered the 243 and the I13 and they both are well made, hard wood with lots of pop and the sound it makes when you square a ball is big league. They claim to sell you the same thing they sell the big leaguers and from what I can tell they really do. And the finish is very aesthetically pleasing. It looks fire:fire: And I emailed them about making me a custom bat and they emailed me back talking about options and what they could do so I went ahead and bought 2 more. These guys really go above and beyond to sell you the best bat you can buy. I'm Tater for life now!

Tater-I13 Pro

Most satisfied I’ve been with a wood bat Got my tater a couple of weeks ago and have already taken well over 1,000 cuts with it. It’s safe to say that this is the best wood bat I’ve ever payed my hands on. Very dense, hard bat and it gives a lot of feedback. You’ll know when you barreled a ball, because Tater’s maple makes the loudest, most satisfying crack I’ve ever heard. Excellent pop, and the i13 I got has the perfect swing weight for my preference. Excellent bat, wouldn’t hesitate to buy another in a heartbeat.

Tater-I13 Pro

All around great Great price, great service, great craftsmanship and great performance! The pine tar i13 bat looks good and feels good. I have no desire to try out any other bat company. Tater is it for me!
