Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between a game baseball and a training baseball?
Game baseballs are full leather, regulation 5 oz weight, and league-stamped for NFHS, NCAA, or pro use. Training baseballs include foam balls (entry-level batting cage and pitching machine training), leather-covered foam-core balls (premium machine balls with regulation feel and no sting), and dedicated practice game balls. We sell all three categories — pick based on whether you're training in a cage, feeding a pitching machine, or playing in a regulation game.
Why does foam baseball weight matter?
A regulation baseball weighs 5 oz. The Tater foam ball is 5 oz exactly — true regulation. Other foam balls sold for pitching machines often run 3.5–4 oz, which sounds minor but creates a major problem in practice. Lighter foam balls catch lift off the machine wheels and rise unnaturally as they approach the plate. Hitters train their eye for a flight path that doesn't exist in real games, then their timing is off on game day. Match regulation weight, and training transfers correctly.
How do Tater baseballs compare to other brands?
Tater baseballs are built around two non-negotiables: regulation weight and craftsmanship. Our 5 oz foam balls match regulation; competitor foam balls don't. Our leather pitching machine balls use Kevlar-stitched seams that survive thousands of machine reps without splitting. Our game balls meet NFHS specs at high school level. We're a Connecticut bat shop that brings the same standard to our balls as we do to our bats — built for serious players, not entry-level rec play.
Tater Baseballs — Foam, Foam-Core Leather & NFHS Game Balls
Tater offers three tiers of baseballs covering every level from indoor cage work to high school game competition. Every ball is built to match regulation 5 oz weight, so machine reps and game at-bats train the same flight path.
Pick the right ball:
- Tater Foam Ball (5 oz) — solid high-density foam, sting-free, built for high-volume cage work and machine reps. Compatible with Trajekt Arc, Hack Attack, iPitch, JUGS, ATEC, Spinball, Heater, and Sports Tutor.
- Tater Foam Core Ball — genuine leather cover + Kevlar-stitched seams over foam core. Throws real breaking balls. The premium training tier.
- Tater Foam Softball (6.5 oz) — regulation softball weight for slow pitch and fastpitch machine work.
- PFK-01 High School Game Ball — NFHS-level construction, full-grain leather, raised seams, cushioned cork core. Game-legal.
Why weight matters. Most foam machine balls run 3.6 oz or less, which makes them rise unnaturally out of the machine. Hitters train their eye for a flight path that doesn't exist in real games. Tater's 5 oz weight fixes that.
