Frequently Asked Questions
What is a balanced wood bat and who should swing one?
Balanced wood bats distribute weight more evenly along the length of the bat rather than concentrating it in the barrel. The result is a lighter, faster-feeling swing that favors bat speed and barrel control over mass through contact. Balanced bats are best for contact hitters, leadoff and middle-of-the-order hitters who prioritize barrel accuracy, and younger or developing hitters who are still building bat speed. Power hitters often prefer end-loaded profiles instead.
What's the difference between Tater's balanced wood bat turn models?
Each model has a distinct profile: X4 is the RA13/Acuña-inspired contact profile; X24 is built on the 271 turn for transition-friendly balance; J21 is the knobless, hamate-friendly contact build; SM6 (Starling Marte) is a medium-large barrel balanced-with-power profile; X12CB is the counterbalance profile for maximum bat speed. Use our Wood Bat Sizing form for a personalized recommendation.
Can I switch between balanced and end-loaded over a season?
Yes — many hitters experiment between profiles to find what fits their swing best. Some hitters use balanced bats during the season and switch to end-loaded for power-development work in practice. Others stay with one profile and refine length and drop instead. Custom builds let you dial in either direction; our Try-On Bundle program (apparel-specific) and Wood Bat Sizing recommendation help you sort it out before you order multiple bats.
Custom Balanced Wood Bats — Built for Contact Hitters
Balanced wood bats distribute weight evenly from handle to barrel — the swing feels lighter and quicker than the scale weight suggests. This is the family contact hitters, leadoff and #2 hitters, and middle infielders gravitate toward.

Maple or birch. Maple is the standard pro choice. Birch is slightly more forgiving. Both are ink-dot certified and built from the same MLB-grade billets we use for player bats. Lead time on custom builds: 2–3 weeks. Need it sooner? See stock bats.
