We took that profile and added an elongated barrel that gives hitters more hitting surface, and a slight end load that creates natural momentum through the hitting zone. Maple or birch?

Maple gives you the hardest hitting surface and the cleanest "pop" sound; birch flexes a touch more and is more forgiving on mis-hits, which a lot of high-school and college hitters prefer. What kind of hitter is the Tater XL5 Pro built for?

The XL5 Pro is built for power hitters. It pairs an elongated barrel with a slight end load — that combination gives you more hitting surface and natural momentum through the zone, which is what you want when you're trying to drive the ball. Contact hitters and hitters still building bat speed are usually better off in a balanced profile like the 271; the XL5 rewards hitters who can already work a heavier feel.

Is the XL5 Pro closer to an AP5 or a 243?

The XL5 is built on the AP5 silhouette — large barrel, slight end load, medium handle, slight flare knob. It's the same overall profile pro hitters know from the AP5 family, with Tater's own elongated-barrel adjustment for a touch more hitting surface. The 243 is similar in feel but typically runs a bigger knob and a more dramatic taper; the XL5 sits between an AP5 and a 243 in hand feel, closer to the AP5.

What's the lead time on a Tater XL5 Pro?

What size wood bat should I order?

Length ranges from 30"–34". Drop weight (length-to-weight ratio) ranges from -3 to +2. Drop weight is the difference between bat length in inches and bat weight in ounces — a -3 drop means a 34" bat weighs 31 oz. Most adult hitters use 32"–34" at a -2 or -3 drop. What types of wood are Tater bats made from?

Hard maple and yellow birch — both MLB-grade. Maple has been the pro standard for over 20 years: densest, hardest hitting surface, biggest pop on clean contact, but a smaller sweet spot and less forgiveness on mis-hits. Birch sits between maple and ash — similar density to maple with more flex on impact, which makes it more forgiving on mis-hits and a smart starting point for hitters transitioning from metal to wood. What is the warranty on Tater wood bats?

30-day limited warranty on structural cracking under normal field use. To qualify, the bat must be a 2021 model year or later, you must be the original purchaser with proof of purchase from an authorized Tater dealer, and you must have followed our hitting guidelines (no cage-style dimpled balls, no storage in extreme heat or cold like a car trunk, no excessive moisture exposure). Why are wood bats cupped at the end?

Cupping is a small concave dish drilled into the end of the barrel. It removes a few grams of mass from the very tip, which shifts the bat's balance point slightly toward the hands and makes the swing feel quicker through the zone. Tater hand-cups each bat, and our process allows for variable cup depths to dial in feel without compromising end-cap strength — which actually reduces the risk of chips and cracks on inside pitches.

What is the black dot on the handle?

Every Tater maple and birch bat carries an ink dot near the handle as proof of MLB-grade slope-of-grain certification. The ink dot's bleed pattern reveals whether the wood grain runs cleanly along the bat's long axis — a tight bleed means safe, MLB-spec slope; a fast bleed means rejected billet. The dot is the visible proof every bat passed inspection before leaving our shop.
